Bronzer Do’s & Don’ts

Whether you’re bronzing up for a night out or prepping for your next tanning session, there are some golden rules (and a few avoid-at-all-costs mistakes) that can make or break your bronzed look. Let’s break it down.

Do’s:

Apply bronzer earlier in the day – This gives enough time for the DHA (the active tanning ingredient) to develop and reduces the risk of bronzer transferring to your bedding. Think of it like makeup – you wouldn’t sleep with a full face and expect clean pillows in the morning!

Allow enough time for development – Most bronzers need 4–6 hours to develop fully. Black Velvet develops faster, within 2–4 hours. Showering after the recommended time will rinse off the cosmetic bronzer (like washing off makeup), but the DHA bronzer will continue to deepen over the next 24 hours.

Use a glove or mitt – If your tanning session lasts over 10 minutes (which it will for more advanced tanners), you won’t be able to wash your hands right away. Consol provides disposable gloves, but you can also bring a mitt from home or apply bronzer cream at home up to an hour before your session.

Follow up with aftercare – Use a tanning intensifier to rehydrate your skin and extend the life of your tan.

Test before you commit – If you’re new to bronzers, try a sample sachet or a natural bronzer before buying a full bottle.

Apply in a circular motion – This helps avoid streaking and ensures even coverage.

Apply sparingly – You don’t need as much bronzer as you might think! Apply in sections (e.g., one arm at a time) to avoid buildup and streaking.

Add extra time for application – Factor in extra undressing time so you don’t feel rushed.

Remove makeup, deodorants & fragrances before use

Use bronzers if you have a base tan – Bronzers work best on skin that already has some colour.

Don’ts:

Don’t use bronzer if you’re a beginner – If you’re new to tanning or don’t have a base tan yet, skip the bronzer until your skin has built some colour. All our bronzers are clearly marked on the vending machine to ensure customers know which product is a bronzer/accelerator.

Don’t wear light clothing after applying bronzer

Don’t overapply – Too much product can lead to uneven results and streaking..

Don’t panic! – Cosmetic bronzers will wash out of bedding.
